December 19, 2011 10:09 PM MDT Hurricane Eugene has weakened to a Category 1 Hurricane some 885 miles WSW of Cabo San Lucas. Eugene is forecast to move harmlessly off into the Pacific without making landfall and should have no affect on Baja weather.

Eugene was the third Major Hurricane (Category 3 or greater) storm of the 2011 season achieving a maximum intensity of Category 4 on Tuesday. The Eastern Pacific usually only yields between 3 and 4 Major Hurricanes per year with 4 months to go in the normal season.

At 2AM MDT Hurricane Eugene is currently located near 17.6N 122.3W and is moving 285° at 11kts. Central barometric pressure is estimated at 987Mb and winds are 65kts with gusts to 85kts. Hurricane force winds extend out 30 miles from the eye and tropical storm force winds extend out as much as 90 miles. 12ft seas extend out as much as 300 miles from the center. The eye is undefined.

Eugene is a weakening rapidly and should be reduced to a tropical storm later today. Eugene is just barely a hurricane.

Path forecasts have remained nearly constant while intensity forecasts have been revised upward. Eugene was originally forecast to only achieve Cat 1 intensity for a brief period on Tuesday, but is now forecast to remain a hurricane through Thursday.

Eugene's History

Eugene was reduced toa Category 1 Hurricane at 9PM on 8/4. At 11PM on 8/3 Eugene was downgraded to a Category 3 Hurricane. At 3PM on 8/3 Eugene was upgraded to a Category 4 Major Hurricane. Eugene was upgraded to the third Major Hurricane of 2011 on the evening of 8/2. Eugene became a Category 2 Hurricane in the early morning hours of 8/2. Eugene was upgraded to a Category 1 Hurricane on the afternoon of Aug 1. Eugene became the fifth named storm of the 2011 hurricane season when upgraded on the afternoon of July 31. Tropical Depression 5E formed well off the coast of El Salvador on the morning of July 31.
