CALVIN WEAKENING IN A HURRY...
July 13, 2011 2:25 AM Tropical Storm Calvin briefly attained hurricane status over night, but will weaken very quickly as it moves over sub 26C waters today. Tropical Storm Calvin is about 490 miles south of Cabo San Lucas.
Tropical Storm Calvin is currently located near 17.1N 111.3W and is moving 285° at 10kts. Central barometric pressure is estimated at 994Mb and winds are 50kts with gusts to 60 kts. Tropical storm force winds extend out as much as 60 miles. TS Calvin is a solid tropical storm, but will weaken quickly dissipating by Monday without making landfall.
It is possible that the system will deliver some cloudy skies as the remnants drift to the NE over the next several days. There will be an increased chance of afternoon thunderstorms in the southern portions of the peninsula mid week.
Calvin briefly attained Category 1 hurricane status on the evening of July 8 but was reduced to a tropical storm by the morning of July 9. Tropical Storm Calvin evolved on the evening of July 7 from Tropical Depression 3E in the warm waters off the southern coast of Mexico. The tropical depression had formed earlier that morning from a persistent Low over +32°C waters.
