Color Enhanced Hurricane Elida

07/18/2008 8:55 AM MDT Hurricane Elida is slowly beginning to lose strength as it moves westward into the Pacific. Hurricane Elida is about 495 miles SSW of Cabo San Lucas. Elida is not expected to significantly affect our weather as it moves over cooler waters and begins to dissipate..

Hurricane Elida's estimated position is near 17.1N 122.2W and is moving 270° at 14kts. Current Central barometric pressure is estimated at 974Mb and winds are 85kts with gusts to 105kts. Elida is a Category 2 Hurricane, the first of the Eastern Pacific Hurricane Season.

Elida formed from Tropical Depression 6E which spun up about 400 miles SE of Acapulco, Mexico on July 10. Elida became the second hurricane of the 2008 Eastern Pacific Hurricane Season on the morning of July 14. 2008 is shaping up to be the 'just about normal year' that the forecasters predicted in the long range forecast. With 5 named storms and of that, two hurricanes, the year is right on the averages.

Hurricane Elida has moved out of the threat area to Mexico or Baja California Sur, no further updates will be made to this information above. Automated information below and images right will be continually updated automatically as available from the National Hurricane Center.
