Tropical Storm Kiko / Hurricane Kiko - Eastern Pacific 2007

Information on Tropical Depression Kiko

Kiko has weakened and passed beyond the threat window for Baja California Sur. No further updates will be posted here until historical data is available.

10/23/07 09AM MDT Kiko has been downgraded to a Tropical Depression about 360 miles due southwest of Cabo San Lucas. The storm is currently located near 18.6N 113.0W. The storm is moving 260° at 11kts.Central barometric pressure is estimated at 1007Mb and winds are 25kts with gusts to 35kts. Baja Sur will probably not even benefit from rain from Kiko.

Kiko is expected to degenerate into a tropical low later today and turn to the NW.

Monday the storm continued to weaken and about sunset the storm was 230 miles south of Cabo San Lucas. On Saturday that storm seemed to be gathering intensity and forecasts call for Kiko to pass less than 100 miles south of Cabo as a Category 1 hurricane. By late evening Saturday the storm began to turn more to the west and intensity forecasts we revised downward. Friday the storm became better organized and increased in intensity to just shy of hurricane status. On Thursday, 10/18, the storm was initially forecast to make landfall on the mainland near Manzanillo on Monday. However, late in the day forecasts were amended to have the storm turn to the NW and continue to strengthen through the 5 day forecast period. During Wednesday, 10/17, Kiko strengthen slightly and move the to the NE, picking up forward speed. Kiko again attained Tropical Storm status on the evening of 10/16. Kiko was downgraded to a Tropical Depression at 3PM on 10/16. Tropical Storm Kiko evolved from TD15E on the morning of October 16th.TD15E formed some 530 miles south of Cabo San Lucas on the evening of October 14th.

Tropical cyclone activity usually tapers off in the Eastern Pacific after the middle of October through the end of Eastern Pacific Hurricane Season, November 30. The latest tropical cyclone to make landfall in Baja occurred on October 13th when Tropical Storm Olivia came ashore in 1967 north of Magdalena Bay ..

The namesake 'Kiko' also holds the record as the only Category 3 Hurricane to ever make landfall in Baja. In a very active cyclone year, 1989, Category 3 Kiko came ashore in the Eat Cape region of Baja Sur in August 28th.
