Tropical Storm / Hurricane Barbara - Eastern Pacific 2007


Information on Tropical Storm Barbara
09AM MDT 06/02/07 Tropical Storm Barbara has moved ashore and dissipated. No further information will be posted on TS Barbara here until historical data is available.

09AM MDT 06/01/07 Tropical Storm Barbara, has held intensity and picked up speed as landfall in the southern most Mexican state of Chiapas is becoming imminent. Tropical Storm Barbara is expected to be short of Hurricane Category 1 status when it comes ashore before noon on Saturday. Heavy rain and winds to 55kts can be expected at that time. Landfall is expected in Chiapas the southern most state of Mexico, before mid day on Saturday. As the storm continues to accelerate, landfall may occur earlier than models current suggest. Storm preparations in the warning areas should be rushed to completion.

It is improbable that Tropical Storm Barbara will have any effect on weather in Baja.

Tropical Storm Barbara is currently located near 13.9N 93.0W and is moving 65° at 7kts. Winds are estimated at 45kts with gusts to 55kts and central barometric pressure is 1000Mb. Forecasts call for the storm to continue to deepen and be packing winds of 45-55kts at the time of landfall Sunday.

Tropical Depression 2E formed some 200 miles south of the Gulf of Tehuantepec on the southern coast of Mexico on the afternoon of May 29. The system strengthen over the next 18hrs and became the second tropical storm of 2007 on the morning of May 30. On May 31 the storm was downgraded to a tropical depression as it began a 160° turn to the NE. in the morning release of 06/01 from the NHC the storm was again upgraded to a tropical storm. Tropical storm watches were posted at that time for much of the coastline in the Gulf of Tehuantepec including parts of Guatemala and Mexico. On the afternoon of 06/01 the storm had shown signs of continue strengthening as it turned another 20° to the north and toward the southern Mexican coastline. Tropical storm warning were posted at 3PM MDT for much of the Gulf of Tehuantepec including parts of Guatemala. By the 9PM forecast release on Friday the storm had picked up speed to 7kts and landfall was pushed forward to Saturday morning. The projected point of landfall is just north of the Mexico/Guatemala border.
