Tropical Storm Alvin - Eastern Pacific 2007

Information on Tropical Storm Alvin

Eastern Pacific Surface Chart
over SST °C

09AM MDT 05/30/07  Alvin has degenerated to a Tropical Low and is not expected to reform. No further updates will be made to this page until historical data is available.

Alvin, the first named storm of the 2007 Eastern Pacific Hurricane Season is weakening and has been downgraded to a Tropical Depression as it continues to move westward into the Pacific. The storm is traversing the border between the 27°C and 26°C thermo cline some 725 miles SW of Cabo San Lucas. Water warmer than 26°C is usually required to sustain cyclonic activity.

The storm's current position is 13.4N 114.6W and movement is 300° at 3kts.. Winds are 30kts with gusts to 40kts and central barometric pressure is estimated at 1005Mb. The storm is forecast to continue weakening though the forecast period  and may diminish to a tropical Low later this weekend. The storm should pose no threat to land.

TD1E was upgraded to Tropical Storm Alvin in the 11PM forecast from the National Hurricane Center on May 28. TD1E was the first tropical depression of the season as well as spawning the first tropical cyclone. TD1E was upgraded at 10PM MDT on 05/28 to TS Alvin. The end of May is late for the formation of the first cyclone in our basin.  In 2006 Alleta formed on May 27. The average date of the first tropical cyclone in our basin is May 25. 1998 saw the latest tropical cyclone formation in the last 10 years with TS Agatha forming on June 11. and 2005 the earliest formation with Adrian on May 17. Adrian was a freak hurricane that formed early and stormed ashore in El Salvador and Guatemala, an area that rarely has hurricane landfall.
