TS Emilia – NOAA Color Image July 27, 2006
July 21-28 Max winds 60kts
Achieved Tropical Storm Status

Information on Tropical Storm Emilia

Tropical Storm Emilia dissipated in the Pacific some 300 miles west of Baja.  The slow moving system endured 7 days, and attempted to achieve Hurricane Status three times but failed. On Saturday. July 23 the forecast track of the storm brought it perilously close to Baja Sur. As it was the storm delivered 4 days of good soaking rain to the southern and western parts of Baja Sur.

Rain in Baja Sur was steady and widespread Tuesday 07/25 with some 1.5" -  3" reported. Los Cabos received rain and some wind causing scattered power outages and some street flooding in downtown.

'SV Starduster' Jim reported that La Paz had received more than 2.10" of steady rain since it began early Tuesday morning. No additional rain was received overnight in La Paz.

On the Pacific coast of Baja Sur, in Pescadero, Insider Reader Jeep tells us that more than 2.5" of steady rain fell there between Monday and Tuesday nights. Winds peaked Tuesday night between 8 and 10PM with gusts 30-40kts.

An Insider Reader  in El Sargento, just southwest of La Paz,  tells us that steady rain there is caused residential flooding and washouts.

We are looking for additional reports of the storms intensity from other Insider Readers along the Pacific coast of Baja Sur. Click here

The impact from TS Emilia on Baja Sur was limited. The long steady rain that the storm delivered will prove beneficial in alieviating the 2 year drought in Baja Sur. Some minor flooding and road damages has occurred, but there were no injuries or loss of life reported. However, we have received reports that significant rainfall in the Central Baja region around Guerreo Negro has caused damage and closures to roadways in the area. We are looking for Road Reports from our readers for all of Baja Sur - Click here to make a Storm Report

Tropical Storm Emilia formed from TD6E which developed on the morning of 7/21 and was only forecast to be a tropical storm through it's life cycle. Forecasts have been revised upward since that time, now calling for Emilia to peak just short of Hurricane Category 2. On the morning of 7/22, the storm was upgraded to Tropical Storm Emilia some 645 miles south of Cabo San Lucas. Through the day on 7/22, NHC forecasts were continuously revising the storm track northward, threatening a landfall of a Category 1 hurricane in Baja Sur late Tuesday or Early Wednesday. On Sunday, 7/23, the storm began to take a more westward track and the threat of landfall in Baja Sur began to diminish. On Monday evening the Mexican Government issued Tropical Storm Watches for parts of Baja Sur that 6hrs later were upgraded to a Tropical Storm Warning. TS Emilia skirted the SW coast of Baja from Cabo San Lucas to Punta Eugenia, then turned more westward on 07/26, and moved off into the Pacific to dissipate.
