Information on Tropical Storm Calvin
08:30PM MDT 28/06/05 Calvin has been downgraded to a tropical depression as
it slowly spins apart, headed into the Pacific. Early afternoon IR indicated
Calvin no longer had a defined center and continued shear should spell the
end for this storm. At 8AM on 28/6, the Mexican government canceled
tropical storm watches that were in effect for parts of the western coast of
Mexico. Tropical depression Calvin is now moving westward and is expected to
dissipate in the next 24-36 hrs.
At 08PM MDT Tropical Storm Calvin was located near 14.8N
105.3W or about 250 miles SSE of Manzanillo.
The storm is moving 235° at 05kts with sustained winds of 20kts with gusts
to 30kts. Central barometric pressure is estimated at 1006Mb.
Calvin is said to be deeply imbedded in a strong easterly flow which will
keep it moving westward over the next several days. By mid day on Wednesday
Calvin will cross the 26°C isotherm and begin to degenerate rapidly.
Calvin weakened during the day on 27/6 with an increase in shear winds.
Calvin will remain over water above 26°C for the next 24 hrs. The storm is
expected to continue paralleling Mexican coast then move westward into the
Pacific. Calvin is not expected to pose a threat to Baja California. Calvin
is a notably small storm.
Calvin became the third names storm of the 2005 Eastern Pacific Hurricane
Season in the 10PM MDT NHC release on Sunday, June 26th. Calvin became a
tropical storm near 14.3 N 98.1 W. Tropical storm watches
were posted for the Mexican coast between Lagunas de Chacahua and
Lazaro Cardenas at 2AM on 27/06. Tropical storm watches have been moved
eastward in the 8AM and again in the 8PM updates on 27/6.
Calvin began weakening the afternoon of 27/6 with a decrease in cloud top
temperatures and evidence of banding decreasing. Although Calvin will remain
over warm water for the next 24hrs, the shear winds which are effecting the
storm are not expected to lessen.
