Baja Norte gets rain from Javier - What is left of it...

Javier made landfall as a tropical depression just south of San Ignacio the morning of 9/19. The remnant low is expected to cross Baja and emerge north of Santa Rosalia and proceed north into Arizona. The storm reorganized slightly over the warm waters of the Sea of Cortez before heading north to provide monsoonal rains to Arizona. Javier was Baja's closest brush with tropical weather in 2004.

The were several reports of damage to Hwy 1 near Vizcaino and northward. Temporary solutions and detours were quickly in place. (Road Report)

The storm, which formed on the morning of September 11, is the tenth named storm of the season. Javier gained hurricane status Sept 12 as it moved slowly northwest. A light northeasterly sheer is impeded the storms initial growth but diminished on 9/14 allowing the storm to build to category 4 strength. Javier inched north for 5 days, and on Sept 15 a Tropical Storm Watch was issued for the southern portion of Baja Sur, with heavy rains and winds anticipated.  The storm lost intensity and size while moving further west than anticipated. This resulted in the cancellation of the watch on Sept 16. On Sept 17 a Tropical Storm Warning was issued for Bahia Magdelena to Punta Engenia on the Pacific Coast and a Tropical Storm Watch for 100 miles north of the warning area. Javier made landfall south of San Ignacio early on 9/19. Once over land the storm began to dissipate rapidly.

Baja residents should remain informed on the status and damage to roads that may be caused by the rain accompanying this storm.

Note: We put Hurricane Richard on this storm Saturday evening and
asked him to direct the storm away from Baja. We would like to thank
Hurricane Richard for his work in deflecting this hurricane!
