Update Report from Escondido

(Escondido 10/4/03) We would like to thank the person who submitted this information and would love to have there name here rather than their Sailmail address! Thanks.

Wanted to update you on the current status of boats in Puerto Escondido. There were 24 boats that were occupied during the hurricane. Many dragged, broke snubbers, wore through chafe gear and so on, but none went aground or had major damage. All crews took action as the storm raged to keep their boats safe. Several boats came dangerously close to going aground.

Boats with people aboard were:
Sarah Elizabeth, Springbok, Ballena, Champagne, Summer Wind, Calliope, Que Tal, Topaz, Pequod, The Cat's Meow, Casual Water, Kindred Spirit, Tuugaalik, Elusive Blue Chip, Western Sea, Chez Moi, Rari, Texan, Angelos, Una Mata, True Companion, Allie 2 and Seven Seas

Of the approximately 60 boats that were unoccupied, 5 dragged but had little or no damage, one dragged with major damage, 6 sunk, and 10 were left aground -- for a total of 22, or more than 1 in 3.

All of these boats are currently in Puerto Escondido. Dragged or broke free, little to no damage:
Popeye -- dragged, radar pole seriously bent
Odyssey -- dragged to middle of the channel, then reset, moved to a safer spot by cruisers
Atajo -- dragged and tangled with another boat, no damage to either boat
4 Peace -- dragged to less than 3 boatlengths from an occupied boat, reset, rode almost chafed through, fixed by other cruisers
Viento Sauve -- serious chafe during storm, rode parted day after storm and boat found floating free in the anchorage

Dragged with major damage:
Mahayana -- dragged through the channel with 65 pound Danforth, believe went on seawall, bottom of port ama torn off (boat is a trimaran), found "anchored" in 35 feet of water at the south end of Isla Danzante. Patched and towed back to Puerto Escondido by The Cat's Meow and a group of cruisers on Tuesday, 9/23.

Boats sunk: Whaler-type fishing boat owned by La Tortuga -- sunk at the dinghy dock, refloated by a group of cruisers Discover Baja -- tour boat owned by Fonatur, still underwater in ellipse
Zinfandel -- broke up on north jetty
HiJinks -- sunk near north jetty, slight possibility of refloating
Revel de Dos (sp?) -- not salvagable
Vagabond Lover -- not salvagable

Boats aground: La Sirena -- refloated with help of Port Captain's boat on Tuesday, 9/23, cosmetic damage only
Distant Vision -- refloated with help of The Cat's Meow on Tuesday, 9/23. Trimaran, damage to centerboard trunk causing water to enter boat. Temporarily patched by cruisers and pumped out. Pumping still periodically needed.
Wild Flower -- refloated with the help of The Cat's Meow on Wednesday 9/24. Damage to stanchions and gel coat.
Toy Boat -- refloated by cruisers on Wednesday, 9/24. No known damage.
Debutante -- refloated with help of The Cat's Meow on Thursday, 9/25. No known damage.
Allie -- holed, patched by owner. Refloated with help of SeaLover (aka Elvin's ponga) on Thursday 9/25.
Winsome -- rode parted, went out the channel, found 5 miles south of Puerto Escondido. Rudder badly damaged and jammed, damage to stanchions and other stainless, lost two outboards before going very hard aground. Boat looted of many items before cruisers could begin guarding boat. Refloated with help of a backhoe, Johnny Johnson's (Topaz) 4x4, The Cat's Meow and help from many other boats in an all-day event. Backhoe arrived at 10 AM, boat was refloated about midnight, everything tidied up and The Cat's Meow back to Puerto Esconido at 3:30 AM (highest tide of the day was at 11 PM). Winsome was anchored in deeper water overnight and returned to Puerto Escondido the next morning, towed by two dinghies. In addition to other damage mentioned above, damage to paint (topsides and bottom) and trim.
Erikazona -- refloated with help from The Cat's Meow on Tuesday, 9/30. Rudder jammed, no other damage known.
Sambita -- high and dry on the north jetty. Valuables have been removed for storage by other cruisers. Believed to have crack in hull, future action not certain.
Cleo -- owned by a cruise ship and stored in Puerto Escondido in summer. Aground in the waiting room. No action taken yet, no known damage.
