BILLFISH: The most likely catch this week was striped marlin with forty one
percent of charters hooking up to fish in the 130 to 200 lb class, however due
to lower numbers of tourists less boats are going out, which is a factor in less
fish being caught. Added to this is the unseasonally cooler weather that Cabo is
experiencing, though I should add, most people anywhere else in the world woudl
consider out current weather fantastic. It has still been really windy on the
Pacific especially late afternoon and nighttime, wheras on the Cortez side there
is not a puff of wind. We are still in a transition and just when it seems we
are about to move into pre-summer mode, it goes back to spring. Gradually, water
temperatures are beginning to climb, which will result in better catches. We did
have some notable catches this week, such as a striped marlin, sailfish and
wahoo aboard “Valerie” on May 25th for Tom McClocklin from Saskatoon, Canada at
the 11.50 spot. This same day “Ruthless” realesed two stripers and boated a 25
lb yellowtin tuna, in the same area for Ruth Asmussen and Richard Brown from
Mansfield, Washington. The day before “C Rod” released a striper a little futher
away at La Herradura as well as catching a 60 lb mako shark for Bob Giles and
friends from Lafayette, Louisiana. Pisces anglers caught a total of 15 striped
marlin this week, plus a sailfish.
OTHER SPECIES: There was not a great deal of activity on offshore smaller game
such as dorado and tuna, in fact we just had the odd fish here and there and of
course, the wahoo mentioned above which was a delightful surprise catch. The
better catches on smaller game were at Cabeza de Ballena on the Cortez side as
well as near to the Old Lighthouse some days. Red snapper up to 18 lbs were
caught , usually two or three per panga, as well as amberjack, jack crevalle and
needlefish. Some large squid where caught right off of the main beach and one 60
lb mako shark off of San Jose.
LOCATION: 11.50 spot, Cabeza Ballena, Destiladeras some days for marlin,
Herradura.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Clear, sunny skies, seas calm on Cortez, rough on the
Pacific.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: Ranging from 62 F on the Pacific to 73 F on the Cortez side.
BEST LURES: Live caballito, blue/white, rapalas, yo yos.
