Endangered Leatherbacks have Hope for the Future

Saving Leatherback Sea TurtlesThe Plight of the Endangered Leatherback Sea Turtle and how you can help...

Critically Endangered Leatherbacks nest on the shores of Todos Santos, but due to low sand temperatures in this region, their eggs will not develop. For this reason, Tortugueros Las Playitas A.C. builds an incubation greenhouse every year to elevate the sand temperature. Then, the Leatherback nests are moved inside where they incubate successfully. The incubation greenhouse in Las Playitas gives the Leatherbacks of Todos Santos hope for the future.

If sand temperatures are too low, why do Leatherbacks nest in Todos Santos? Evidence suggests that Leatherback Sea Turtles are moving north from the highly developed Los Cabos tourist resort due to loss of habitat. It is also possible for Leatherback nests to hatch in Todos Santos during record hot years.

Elisabeth Saving Sea TutlesTortugueros Las Playitas A.C. is an Environmental Conservation, non-profit organization based in Todos Santos, Mexico. Our primary objective is to protect and restore the Endangered Sea Turtles that nest on the beaches of Todos Santos. Our organization runs nightly patrols to relocate Sea Turtle nests, provides Environmental Education to school-aged children, and participates in International Environmental Conservation networks. We are operating with a permit issued by SEMARNAT/Direccion General de Vida Silvestre.

How You Can Help:

Tortugueros Las Playitas offers volunteer opportunities, memberships, and internships. We also welcome the public to our hatchling releases which usually take place late December through May. Anyone interested in participating in our conservation efforts is encouraged to visitour website www.todostortugueros.org , and/or contact us at tortugueroslasplayitas@gmail.com
