New Protected Biosphere Reserve Created in Baja

 


06/05/07 A Mexican Decree To the Biosphere Reserve  "Bahia of Los Angeles and Channel of Whales And Salsipuedes"

Today, 5 of June of 2007, in commemorating the Worldwide Day of the Environment, the government of Mexico published in the Official Newspaper of the Federation the decree creating the Reserve of the Biósfera (Biosphere) "Bay of Los Angels and Channel of Whales and Salsipuedes (Mexican saying literally meaning “leave if you can”)

This decree is the conclusion of a process initiated by Pronatura in the Northwest of Baja California in 2001, and with the support of the community of Bay of Los Angeles, the municipal and state governments, and an ample group of conservationists, organizations and academic institutions.

The new Bio-reserve, includes 388.000 hectares of high-priority marine habitat, includes beaches, lagoons and areas of fishing. The region is home to the whale shark (actually the largest fish in the world), the fin whale, five species of marine turtles threatened, and marine fish of commercial importance, sea lions also enormous colonies of birds, framed in a pristine landscape of great beauty.

This reserve has the objectives to conserve the biological wealth of this region, promoting the sustainable use of its natural resources for benefit of the local communities. The reserve will pay special attention to the activities fishing and tourism, cooperatively helping with the authorities’ responsibility to obtain productivity, efficiency, while taking care of the environment.
