Renting Cars in Baja & Mexico Road Signs

Budget Rental Cars of Baja California Sur began its operations in La Paz Baja California Sur in 1994. Budget Rental Cars of Baja now has expanded to 11 locations through out all of Baja California Sur to better serve you. Budget Rental cars of Baja offers many different models and rates depending on your needs and whether you will be dropping your car off at the same location you picked it up at or another of their convenient locations.

While driving in Baja and Mexico is very similar to the U.S. and Canada, there are many signs that a motorist who does not speak Spanish may not understand. Budget Rental Cars of Baja California Sur has included a few of these signs with their translated meanings to help the foreign motorist understand the road ahead and drive safely while here in Baja.

The Orange signs inform you to take greater precaution or danger in the road ahead.

Danger circulate (proceed) with caution

Slow (diminish) your Speed

The White signs are more informative or cautionary

Speed limit signs are the international format. 80 kilometers per hour which is equal to 50 Miles per hour and no, the police will not accept the excuse that you thought the signs were in miles per hour!

Dangerous curve ahead 300 meters. Probably one of the most important signs to learn in Mexico. Many sharp curves along Baja's Highway 1 have very little bank and sometimes even bank at the wrong angle. Take these signs seriously and slow down.

Caution Livestock Zone (ahead) this can mean horses, cows, burros, goats, chickens and just about any other farm animal that grazes in Baja

No passing with a solid (continuous) line on highway

This road is not for driving at High Speed

Seatbelts are required by law in Baja California Sur (in fact in all of Mexico)

Speed Reducer also known as a tope or speed bump. These obstacles range from a pattern of reflectors on the road that generate noise to a transmission removing mini-mountains in the roadway. Topes are also indicated by the yellow sign shown here or a hard to discern drawing of a sedan passing it's front wheels over a tope.

Obviously a Kilometer marker, distance is from the last major interchange or city generally. Used by many to give directions to places just about anywhere in Mexico

They also have some signs that are pretty international in their graphic design and really are fairly self explanatory.

Cows ahead, of course they don’t read so don’t just assume you will see them at these signs. Oncoming drivers with their four way flashers on are indicating animals near or on the road ahead.

Hopefully this is obvious, it means No Passing; however you will find many drivers ignore these signs, sometimes at great risk.

Vado (dip or dry river bed) ahead. These dips in the road may not always be dry and can be very full of raging water during the rainy season

Trash (basura) can ahead. Yes, they are trying hard to help people keep the highway clean these days.

While these are just a few of the signs you will see, the best advice is to keep your speeds down and don’t panic if you miss a turn or a place you are looking for. It is always better to calmly double back to where you want to go rather than make a fast stop or sudden turn. The Mexican people are fairly aware of the rental cars and allow for the fact that the foreigner maybe having a little trouble driving and generally are very patient and understanding.

It is also advisable not to drive at night because of the black cows, other animals and large trucks that are now very frequently driving in large caravans on the highway.

When you travel to Baja Sur or Los Cabos, renting a car can prove economical as well as allowing you to explore a wider range of what Baja has to offer. Renting a car for a week is barely more than you would pay for taxis in Los Cabos just to and from the airport!  Travel along Baja's well marked and traveled roads can lead to discoveries of the magic parts of Baja, inaccessible to those at the mercy of taxis and provided transportation.

Budget offers two tiers of insurance coverage for you while driving in Mexico. Many people assume they hold additional coverage when renting with a credit card. You should check your coverage specifically for Mexico, as having an accident without proper coverage can really put a damper on your vacation fun. If you have not driven much in Mexico before, we highly recommend that you purchase the full coverage insurance that Budget offers.

Seguros (Insurance):

Collision Damage Waiver:
Deductible 10% over the cost of the vehicle
Covers:
Medical costs
Civil responsibility
Damage to other vehicles or objects

Full Coverage:
All of the same above but with no deductible
