Opera Events, Cruisers Welcomed & Phase 2 Launched at CostaBaja Resort
What a month November has been, here at CostaBaja Resort & Marina in La Paz! A series of fabulous events celebrating the Baja lifestyle came to a crescendo with the gala event, officially launching Phase 2 of this residential/resort community on the Sea of Cortez, in Baja California Sur. With the opening of the CostaBaja Beach Club and the celebration of the release of the Las Colinas Hillside Homes, there is certainly plenty to tell you about this month.
By mid November the Baja tourist season is in full swing. The boaters and cruisers show up in greater numbers to the Sea of Cortez. The Governor’s Rally arrived in La Paz mid month and was welcomed to CostaBaja Resort and Marina with a buffet in the courtyard of Pueblo Marinero on November 17th for more than 200 people.
The Governor’s Cup Rally is not a race, but is a run from Cabo San Lucas, up the Sea of Cortez, to La Paz. It is intended to encourage some of the boats, arriving with the more than 200 sailboats in the Baja Ha-Ha, to visit La Paz and discover the magic and beauty of the cruising grounds near La Paz and the opportunities at CostaBaja. This year more than 45 sailboats ‘made the turn’ as we call it, and “raced” to the party at CostaBaja.
Mid-month also brought the highly anticipated release of the Las Colinas hillside homes in the development of CostaBaja Phase II. These 56 new hillside homes—designed in a rustic, yet contemporary style--will feature two story living, adjacent to the coming soon Gary Player Design Golf Course. These new homes will also enjoy a spectacular view across the Ensenada de La Paz and Bahia de La Paz and owners are certain to witness more than their share of sunsets over the Sea of Cortez. With prices starting in the mid $300K USD to mid $500K USD these homes are expected to move quickly.

Then came the FUBAR Party on November 19. No, the party was actually a stunning success - it was the guests that were FUBAR, standing for Fleet Underway to Baja Rally. Forty-five yachts arrived at CostaBaja with the rally and the marina staff did an awesome job of handling all the paperwork for the all new guests in just one day. That night CostaBaja hosted a beachfront banquet with mariachis and other musical entertainment. Many of the guests and their beautiful power yachts were new to the Sea of Cortez and were impressed with CostaBaja Marina’s world class facilities, beautiful boating waterways and close by pristine islands and beaches.
Sponsored by the Del Rey Yacht Club, I met the lead organizer of the event, Bruce Kessler. Although a little worn from the responsibilities of his post, Bruce told me the trip had been smooth sailing for the participants, many of whom had ventured out of their home waters for the first time with this rally. Many of participants were considering porting there vessels here long term while others had become so enchanted by the resort that they were exploring home ownership at CostaBaja.
The next morning the FUBAR guests were amongst the first to experience the new CostaBaja Beach Club. Treated to breakfast and a cruising skills lecture by renowned Baja mariner Pat Rains, the group enjoyed a sunrise breakfast on the water’s edge in the spectacular Beach Club.
On American Thanksgiving CostaBaja again broke out the fiesta for the FUBAR crowd and other visiting guests from the U.S., hosting a turkey and stuffing banquet in the courtyard of Pueblo Marinero. As CostaBaja has consistently proven top drawer, the banquet was catered by Denis’s Catering of Los Cabos and the more than 180 guests had a marvelous time.
Friday brought the official opening of the CostaBaja Resort and Marina’s new Beach Club. As we had mentioned in a previous article, the Beach Club takes enjoying a cold cervesa and wiggling your toes in the Baja sand to a whole new level. A crowd of about 250 people were treated to live music, botanas and open bar. The attention to detail in the design and construction is striking. Guests ‘ooohed’ and ‘ahhhed’ over the stacked wood bar, cobble art floors and the astonishing 16’ tall inner-lit steel cactus that grace the bar. But we’ll show you more of that in a special article on the Beach Club.
The coup de gras however, was yet to come. Saturday evening brought the celebration of the official launch of CostaBaja Resort development, Phase II. The Beach Club is now open and construction is about to begin on two new residential developments ---both with fabulous sea views: VistaMar Residences and Casitas and Las Colinas hillside homes. Other key components of the exciting Phase II of this impressive resort will include the Gary Player Design Golf Course and the luxurious Espiritu Spa.

The stone bluffs were lit by colored searchlights as black tie guests arrived in the new amphitheater at CostaBaja. Sound and light crews from Mexico City had prepared the stage and overflow viewing area with a giant TV screen for the evening’s events. The evening of classical and Mariachi music was unlike anything the guests had witnessed in La Paz previously. The featured performer of the evening was Mexican tenor Fernando De La Mora. Since De La Mora’s debut in 1987 he has created a new style of concert in which he mixes fine Mexican music with opera arias and mariachi/symphony orchestras.
Following the concert there was a lavish reception in the courtyard of the Pueblo Marinero where wine, champagne, gourmet food and more music flowed until the early hours.
The developers and staff of CostaBaja Resort and Marina all deserve a big thanks for all the extra work that went into the closing weeks of November. One guest commented that “Everything that CostaBaja presents is the biggest and best ever seen before in La Paz.” With this level of commitment to making the first destination resort project in La Paz a success, it is easy to visualize where this project is headed. The time to act is now to attain your piece of this expanding project that is sure to become an icon of the La Paz recreational living lifestyle.
