Fifteen minutes north of the La Paz airport lies the small community of El Centenario. You’ve probably driven through it, maybe had a meal in one of the local restaurants, almost certainly you’ve heard of it. But if you’ve ventured only a block or so off the Carretera al Norte (Highway to the North), maybe you haven’t seen the neighborhood of Haciendas Palo Verde. If you haven’t, you’re missing the best value for quality homes that can be found in La Paz. I can say this because I recently moved to La Paz from the US and have the unique opportunity to both live and work in this wonderful community.
My wife and I began our home search in early 2009 and we must have looked at literally thousands of homes online. It took months to reduce the list but, with the help of some very helpful and well informed local real estate agents, the list was slowly whittled down until there were just 10 locations. We flew down and over the course of a few days, we were able to tour them all. Finally, there were only 3 properties remaining and my wife and I carefully evaluated the pros and cons of each offering. Ultimately, we made our decision based on the construction quality, investment value and the confidence that we found with the developer at Palo Verde, Steve Byers. When we met with him, we explained our needs, our budget and our timetable and Steve responded quickly and efficiently with a lot and home design package that was perfect for us. We made our purchase in December of 2009 and home construction began in mid-January.
Haciendas Palo Verde has several move-in ready homes to choose from but we chose to build and each week, we were treated to an array of new construction photos that Palo Verde posted on line. This unique feature allowed us to watch, almost step by step, as our home began to take form. About half way through, we paid another visit for a first-hand look at the progress and to discuss a few ideas for changes and additions that we wanted to see. We were delighted when Palo Verde agreed to each of the changes without the typical “gotchas” that are so often found in post purchase change requests. Steve offered each of our upgrades at prices just as though we hadn’t yet signed the deal and he made excellent suggestions on how best to incorporate our requests into the overall project. Our home was finished on time, on budget and not a detail was missed. Like many, I’ve bought and sold a few houses in my years and statement is one that can rarely be made.
Building an ocean view home in a seaside community has been a lifelong dream of my wife and me. Admittedly, we were a little nervous about managing this transaction in a foreign country but Steve Byers and everyone at Haciendas Palo Verde was abundantly helpful and had the ability, experience and true desire to make each step as easy and as it could possibly be. Building this home was something that we could afford to do only once and I consider us extremely fortunate to have chosen all the paths that brought us to this amazing neighborhood.
Haciendas Palo Verde is the culmination of the life work of Steve Byers. Mexican born American with dual citizenship, he has been steeped in the culture, language and traditions of the country for more than a decade. His deep roots in the community have served to foster longstanding relationships with the local laborers and craftsman. Uncompromising on quality, he has the respect of builders and buyers alike. Due to his history and bi-cultural experience, Steve Byers is in the unique position to be sensitive to
the demands of the market while finding the very best construction talent available. Says Steve Byers, “We'll build you a great Spanish Colonial home and we'll stand by it.”
