Senior Staff at CostaBaja accepts environmental awardf

CostaBaja Receives a Green Community Award

PROFEPA, Mexico’s Federal Environmental Protection Agency, recently awarded the resort community a certificate of environmental quality and achievement. The new head of PROFEPA, Pablo Tamez Molino, was on hand to present the award to CostaBaja Resort & Marina’s General Director Alejandro Yberri and some of the members of the CostaBaja staff responsible for achieving this goal.

The award, the first of its kind to be issued to a development in La Paz, is the result of CostaBaja’s compliance with an environmental audit in a wide variety of factors; including water and electrical usage, appropriate use of maintenance chemicals and responsible management of the natural surroundings. The award is the culmination of a year long effort, voluntarily pursued by the resort management and staff..

“This is something we are very proud of and something we all believe in.” said Sr. Yberri. “Especially since we are here in a desert environment and need to protect what we have.”

CostaBaja MarinaThe resort uses reclaimed water for irrigation, desalinated water for residential use, special drought resistant grasses on the golf course and minimal amounts of pesticides and fertilizers on the property. By Federal regulation the resort has also gone to significant efforts to preserve indigenous plant life during the construction process.

“This has been a year long process to which the entire staff worked together to make the necessary adjustments in our processes and to provide the documentation required to achieve this goal.” said director of operations Arturo Pena.

From the inception CostaBaja has made it part of the developmental plan to minimize the impact of the resort community on the surrounding beautiful and fragile desert environment on the shores of the Sea of Cortez.

Golf Camp for Kids

Kids Golf CampGolf is a new addition to the many exciting activities available in La Paz and CostaBaja Resort & Marina is working with the local community to inspire a new generation of golfers.

The spectacular and challenging 18 hole Gary Player Signature Course was opened in the fall of 2010, the first of its kind in Mexico and only the second golf course in this quiet coastal community on The Sea of Cortez, so most of the 20 youngsters attending the camp had never swung a club before. Course golf coach Luis Rangel and his team of assistants patiently helped the young boys and girls develop a positive association with a game that can be enjoy for a lifetime.

Open to children ranging from 6 to 16 years of age, the three week kid’s camp provided more than just golf, it also was an introduction to the CostaBaja lifestyle. The youngsters enjoyed cooking classes, arts and crafts, paddle boarding, beach activities, first aid instruction and more all while under the watchful eye of camp staffers.

Girls on putting greenIt was a true delight to watch these boys and girls as they made their first drive down the practice range or sank their first putt on the practice green during the golf clinic portion of the camp. Frustration was not allowed, as a member of the instructing staff would quickly intervene to help the youngster move up the learning curve.

The youngest of the camp members had just celebrated his 6th birthday a few days before the camp began and despite handling a special junior sized club nearly as tall as he, getting that little white ball to connect with the club proved a challenge. But all was rewarded and he sprouted a giant grin as his drive finally bounded a short distance onto the driving range after special encouragement from coach Sr. Rangel.

The camp was such an overwhelming success that plans are in the works to offer the event again next summer and potentially expand the program as the resort grows.

New CostaBaja EntranceNew Entrance at CostaBaja Adds Elegance and Security

The new entrance and roadway are nearly complete and they are an exciting improvement to this resort community on the Sea of Cortez.

The grand new entrance enhances the special qualities of CostaBaja Resort & Marina from the first moment you enter the property. Owners and guests will be impressed with the aesthetics, as well as the added security provided by the entrance gatehouse, attended 24hrs a day by sharply dressed and courteous security staff.

Now in the final stages of construction, landscapers are putting the finishing touches on the new entrance, which is just a few hundred meters down the road from the previous entrance. Special automatic gated lanes for the convenience of residents will soon be opened and key cards will be issued as soon as system testing is complete.

The project involved a much larger undertaking than just the construction of the impressive new entrance however. For more than 50 years the two lane road that ran through the resort was the only route to Pichilingue, the port of La Paz and the beaches beyond. Undertaking the construction of nearly a kilometer of new road and an overpass, the main road has been rerouted to pass over the hill to the north of the resort rather than around it and connects with the recently constructed Federal route from the beaches and port to Hwy 1 south and onward to Cabo San Lucas. This will provide quicker and safer access to destinations beyond, virtually eliminates local traffic in front of the resort and trims about 5 minutes off the trip from CostaBaja to the major shopping and cinema complexes on the south side of La Paz.
