CostaBaja Receives a Green Community Award
PROFEPA, Mexico’s Federal Environmental Protection Agency, recently awarded the resort community a certificate of environmental quality and achievement. The new head of PROFEPA, Pablo Tamez Molino, was on hand to present the award to CostaBaja Resort & Marina’s General Director Alejandro Yberri and some of the members of the CostaBaja staff responsible for achieving this goal.
The award, the first of its kind to be issued to a development in La Paz, is the result of CostaBaja’s compliance with an environmental audit in a wide variety of factors; including water and electrical usage, appropriate use of maintenance chemicals and responsible management of the natural surroundings. The award is the culmination of a year long effort, voluntarily pursued by the resort management and staff..
“This is something we are very proud of and something we all believe in.” said Sr. Yberri. “Especially since we are here in a desert environment and need to protect what we have.”
The resort uses reclaimed water for irrigation, desalinated water for residential use, special drought resistant grasses on the golf course and minimal amounts of pesticides and fertilizers on the property. By Federal regulation the resort has also gone to significant efforts to preserve indigenous plant life during the construction process.
“This has been a year long process to which the entire staff worked together to make the necessary adjustments in our processes and to provide the documentation required to achieve this goal.” said director of operations Arturo Pena.
From the inception CostaBaja has made it part of the developmental plan to minimize the impact of the resort community on the surrounding beautiful and fragile desert environment on the shores of the Sea of Cortez.
