Gary Player Attends Ground Breaking for New Golf Course in La Paz

This has been an exciting week at CostaBaja Resort and Marina in La Paz. The visit of Mr. Gary Player and the official ground breaking of the Gary Player Signature Golf Course already under construction here at the resort. The course, scheduled to open in 2010, will be the defining word in golf in Baja. The spectacular views will only serve to enhance the challenging course, the first to be designed by the prestigious Gary Player Design firm for Mexico.
Home owners, perspective owners, CostaBaja executives, international press, real estate professionals and golf fans from La Paz and as far away as Australia attended the ground breaking event on the shores of the beautiful Bay of La Paz on the morning of January 27th to watch Gary Player tee off from a temporary tee located on the beach and very near where the new 9th hole will be located.
Following the photo opportunity Mr. Player spoke at length of his love for the game, the importance of family, health and the environmental improvements being implemented for gold course management here at CostaBaja. The CostaBaja course will have a number of innovations to course management that will put more ‘green’ into both the environmental aspect of the game as well as the aesthetic
appeal of the course. A water treatment plant, designed and built for the irrigation of the course will recycle waste water from the city of La Paz and be used to create a small lake within the course and irrigate the fairways and greens. Other ‘green’ techniques will be used as well, such as low moisture turf and increased use of the natural flora and terrain. The spectacular vistas from the course will also make this golf course in La Paz one of the most desired courses in Mexico.
Following the ground breaking ceremonies a reception was held at the CostaBaja Beach Club, located on the shores of the Sea of Cortez and a focal point of this recreation oriented development. An even greater number of people attended the reception to have the opportunity to shake hands and have their picture taken with Mr. Gary Player, one of the preeminent golfers of our time. There were nothing but smiles to be seen all around as the crowd gathered to celebrate the coming of what is to be a major attraction to the Resort development and to the city of La Paz.
Construction of the Gary Player Signature course has been underway for some time and several of the holes are already taking shape. Earth moving and contouring will take time, then the waiting period for the course to ‘grow in’ but when complete, the course will offer and exceptional opportunity to play golf, not only in relationship to other courses but to the rest of Mexico and the world as well.
In other news from CostaBaja, the beachside tennis courts will open in a matter of days. The courts, located just above the beachfront on the Ensenada de La Paz will allow tennis fans to enjoy a game on one of two beautiful new courts, while enjoying the vista of the blue green waters of the Sea of Cortez.
The VistaMar community continues to make progress, as the six story luxury condominium and penthouse tower rises on the bluff overlooking the most of the Resort and the Bay of La Paz. Meanwhile the Las Colinas community is taking shape as earth moving and footings are being prepared for these single family attached homes.
