CostaBaja Resort & Marina in La Paz is very proud of the new Gary Player Signature Golf Course which opened full time December 17. I recently had opportunity to sit down and discuss the course with the CostaBaja Golf Club general manager Carl Rygg. Carl works for Troon Golf, one of the most respected names in golf course management.
Carl invited me to join him at the CostaBaja Golf Club clubhouse which is perched on the crest of the hill o at the entrance to the La Paz harbor. Driving up the clubhouse entrance the impressive vistas crescendo like the music of Mussorgsky. As you approach the clubhouse parking you are witness to without a doubt the best view of the entire Bay of La Paz, the ensenada and the city itself in a 300° panorama.
Facing west, the CostaBaja Golf Clubhouse overlooks the resort property and will celebrate every beautiful sunset across the Bay of La Paz. The final touches are still being put in place, as gardeners hurried about the grounds. The striking 12’ artistic gateway welcomes visitors with a drama that belies the intimacy of the rest of the structure.

Gary Player, Mexicana golf pro Lorena Ochoa, other dignitaries and guests were on hand in November to celebrate the inauguration of the latest recreational addition to CostaBaja and attractions to tourists in La Paz. The pro shop is already up and fully stocked to meet your golf accessories needs. A bevy of smiling faced sales associates greeted me as Carl provided a tour of the newly opened facility.
Carl said, “You wont’ find a 12 pack of those day-glow yellow golf balls in our pro shop.” Part of the Troon reputation is for the quality and professionalism of the pro shop goods and staff. They have top notch Callaway equipment for rent to those folks who left the clubs at home, along with apparel and golf accessories.
The Club House restaurant offers a spectacular view of La Paz, either from the patio or from the floor to ceiling glass walled interior. Although I did not have opportunity to sample the fare on this visit, I expect it will rival the spectacular view in taste and presentation, as the head chef is well know in La Paz for his delicious creations at the restaurant “Gula” and the CostaBaja Beach Club.
We settled in Carl’s office, which, as corner offices go, has a world class view. Now I know I have mentioned the view repeatedly, but those who believe that the scenery is ‘part of the game’ will be fulfilled a round on this Gary Player Signature Golf Course.
Carl started by explaining his role as general manager and Troons involvement in the CostaBaja Golf Club. Carl is a recreational golfer with more than 30 years experience on the course management side of golf. Troon is a 3rd party operator that manages about 200 courses world wide. All aspects of the Golf Club for the CostaBaja Resort are the responsibility of the Troon team.
Just as they selected Gary Player’s design team for making a challenging course in harmony with the dramatic landscape of the property, CostaBaja carefully chose Troon for their management reputation and course branding.
Carl compared what Troon course management brings to the CostaBaja Golf Course to the expectations that the Ritz Carton brings to hotels. Troon courses provide a consistency of quality that customers can expect from one course to another. Golf aficionados are well aware of the Troon brand.
As we discussed the course layout I tried to pin Carl down on his favorite hole on the course. “Since the course winds through the CostaBaja property it presents such a wide variety of interests and challenges that it is hard to say. It is certainly one of the finest courses in Baja. We are looking forward to feedback from our golfers as more people have opportunity to play the course.”
Carl also pointed out that CostaBaja works hard to maintain a ‘green course’ not only in appearance, but in its impact on the environment. CostaBaja constructed a waste water recycling plant on property that reclaims waste water that normally
would have been discharged into the Sea of Cortez. The irrigation water for the golf course and the resort is therefore naturally rich in nitrogen and helps to limit the use of fertilizers.
Carl and the CostaBaja Golf Club team and anxious for more golfers to come and take a swing at this spectacular new golf course, only the second in La Paz. The course is now open 7 days a week.
If you are interested in visiting the CostaBaja Resort & Marina in La Paz they are offering special travel packages. Who knows, with the properties available fore immediate delivery in the newly opened VistaMar and Las Colinas communities you might find yourself calling CostaBaja home.![]()
