Sleep Dentistry in Los Cabos

Patient experiencing Sleep Dentistry
Dental Tourists travel from all over the USA, Canada & Europe to receive
treatment at Angels Touch Dental Clinic in San Jose del Cabo. One of the
reasons they do so is because the clinic is one of only a few dental practices
in Mexico that offers a full array of anesthesia for what is termed Sedation
or Sleep Dentistry.
It is estimated that approximately 30 to 40 million Americans avoid seeing
the dentist because of dental anxiety or dental phobia. People with dental
anxiety have fears that are often greatly exaggerated. Dental phobia is
a more serious condition. People with this condition are terrified and
panic-stricken when it comes time to see the dentist, pay taxes or go
to a hotel Time-Share presentation.
Sleep
dentistry, is a term that refers to the use of anesthesia during dental
procedures such as t
ooth implants, root canals, and tooth extraction.
Sedation often used during procedures that require an extensive amount
of time, as well as for patients who exhibit dental phobia or have difficulty
controlling their movements. This may include children, people with
Parkinsons, Cerebral Palsy or folks who “just know” the doc is going to sneak that two-foot long needle in their mouth when they’re not looking.

With
Sleep Dentistry one can dream away of dolphins, margaritas and Cabo
while the dentist puts in your new crowns.
While the term "sleep dentistry" implies that patients are unconscious,
this is usually not the case. Some forms of dental sedation alleviate
anxiety or put patients in a dreamlike state, so that little is felt
or remembered from the procedure.
The types of sedation generally used are:
• Nitrous oxide (Laughing Gas)
• Intravenous (IV) sedation
• Oral sedative
• General anesthesia
Oral
Anesthesia and IV Sedation are administered at Angels Touch clinic.
The clinic doctors can perform extensive dental treatments and surgeries
under general anesthesia in partnership with private American hospitals
such as Ameri-Med in Los Cabos and Salvatierra General Hospital in La
Paz. These facilities are only used when the patient is severely incapacitated
or so mentally traumatized at the thought of visiting the nice tooth
doctor that they have to be literally “knocked out.”
For Dental Tourists or even local patients whose work demands preclude
multiple visits to a clinic, the use of sedation allows them to have
dental work that would normally require 5-10 office visits done in two
or three longer sessions.
Patients have been sedated and upon recovery a few hours later – have a full mouth of new temporary crowns in place. Not only that, most patients have little or no memory of their procedures being done though they were semi-conscious during the treatments and were able to communicate with the doctors and follow their instructions.
In Mexico, (as in many countries) nitros oxide and full
anesthesia can only be administered in a hospital by an anesthesiologist.
Medical and dental clinics cannot legally use these sedatives. Mexican
Health authorities allow only certified doctors of anesthesiology to administer
these sedations in a full hospital environment that has the back-up facilities
and personnel necessary to care for fully sedated patients.
Mexico does not allow use of nitros oxide outside of hospitals for two
good reasons. The first is that studies have shown that people such as
medical staff that have constant exposure to this gas over time begin
to develop symptoms of loss of physical motor control similar to Parkinsons
disease. The other reason is drug abuse. Nitros oxide is widely abused
in the USA where balloons of the gas are sold at concerts, car speedway
events etc. Only Doctors of anesthesiology can administer nitros oxide
in Mexico.
It
is important that you know who is going to be administering and properly
monitoring your sedation as well as performing your dental work. Board
Certified Maxillo-Facial Oral Surgeon Dr. Alponso Peña and Endodontist
Dra. Rosa Elena Peña at Angel’s Touch Clinic have worked in Baja Sur
hospitals for over twenty years and are highly experienced in treating
sedated patients in hospital and clinic environments. Both Dentists
are past presidents of the Baja Sur Dental Association and graduated
from the University National Autonomous in Mexico City with High Honors.
Angels Touch also employs a Doctor of Anesthesiology who administers
IV anesthetics in the clinic, or nitros oxide and full anesthesia in
local hospitals.
Patients love having Sleep Dentistry when having fillings, root canals,
crowns, implants etc. at the clinic. Even the most dental sensitive
patient, who greatest nightmare is that trip to the dentist, can now
zone-out and enjoy movies such as March of the Penguins or Cirque Soleil
during a root canal at Angels Touch Dental Clinic.
Sleep dentistry costs $250 for oral sedation to as much as (you-don’t-want-to-know)
for full blown hospitalization, anesthesiologist and support staff.
The latter is rarely needed.
