Carnaval 2007 is now history (February 15-20, 2007) . The event was
well received, as usual and well attended. The weather for the event
was good, particularly the last three days when our north winds
slacked off. The BajaInsider staff attended the first night of the
street fair and the last night of the parade.
This was my sixth Carnaval, and there were no dramatic
changes. The vendor booths that line the Malecon have grown in number
and sophistication since my first attendance.
The headline performing acts jammed the intersection
of 16 de Septembre and the Malecon. Carnavals ride we popular as usual
with the the teenage crowd. Security was tight. We witness an event
where a scuffle might has ensued, but toristica police hustled both
parties by the elbow from sight of other revelers.
The final night of the parade was delayed after a
handful of floats and marchers had already moved on down the Malecon
past the Hotel Los Arcos. Apparently, the float that was to bear the
Carnaval Queen had a mechanical failure. After about 20-30 minutes the
offending diesel tractor was pulled aside and the parade continued.
Another successful Carnaval comes to a close and we
start looking forward to next year.
