Second Annual La Paz Gold Cup Marlin Tournament

Tecate girl at the Black & Blue tournamentThis comming weekend sport fishermen will have the opportunity to compete for $2.5 million peso in guaranteed cash prizes and a 2008 Pickup Truck. The Second Annual La Paz Gold Cup Black & Blue Marlin Tournament is the competitive sport fishermen's opportunity to challenge famous fishing grounds and support a non-profit organization at the same time, beginning this October 2nd to the 5th, 2008 in La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico.

The Black and Blue Marlin tournament originally started as a small event organized by Club Balandra Rotary Club. A few years later, they asked James Curtiss (The Cortez Club), Jeffrey Curtiss (Playa de La Paz), Ray Novelli (Maravia), Wayne Hilbig (CostaBaja Resort and Marina) , Jorge Pickett (Rotary Club), Robert Heffner (La Concha Pearl)  and Miguel Izquierdo (Notray 12) to be sponsors for the tournament; all of them business men and developers in La Paz with a strong sense of community and devoted to this beautiful city.

These men, along with Club Balandra, decided to make a bigger tournament with the motto “Charity begins at home, so let´s look after those less fortunate in La Paz”. Club Balandra´s tournament always helped Clínica Osiris and that was the beneficiary for the First Annual La Paz Gold Cup in 2007, handing $300,000 pesos and giving 14 people the chance to receive new prosthesis. For 2008 the committee decided to spread the wealth and double efforts to also support La Ciudad de las niñas y los niños de La Paz and DIF Municipal.

In the words of Mr. James Curtiss “There are other charities that we will like to help. We are changing people’s lives by putting together a fun tournament for locals and foreigners; we are giving children a chance for the future”

CostaBaja Resort and Marina is the venue for the second year in a row. The committee chose this place because it is the number one resort destination in La Paz, up to today, complete with a state-of-the-art marina, Fiesta Inn hotel and Marine Village; so it offers the infrastructure needed for such an event.

Everybody is invited to participate in this tournament, from tourists to locals, experts and amateurs. The entry fee is very accessible to almost anybody and the cash prices are the largest in the history of fishing tournaments in La Paz.

To enter the tournament, fishermen must register on-line or at registration day on October 2nd at Pueblo Marinero of Marina CostaBaja.

The Festival of Life at CostaBaja Resort & Marina

This year, besides the tournament, the Gold Cup is having a Festival of Life, giving the participants, their families and the general public, a chance to experience La Paz, The People and The culture. This family event includes live music, art shows, performances, art workshops, contests, food and fantastic ambience at the Pueblo Marinero of CostaBaja. The Festival of Life will take place the 3th and 4th of October and the entrance is free.

We invite everybody to come and help us to help this three amazing institutions by donating your time, being a sponsor or coming to enjoy the Festival of Life. Ask us about how you can also be part of this amazing experience.
