Group sport fishing at Isla Cedros in the Pacific
Fishing Charters in the Cedros Islands a just a few hours drive away or a short flight. But the fishing takes you back in history.

Sport fishing at Cedros IslandThis year’s fishing during July and August have been different in many ways from previous years, probably due to El Nino, but the fishing has still been great. The water is colder, in the 50’s, up to 67 F in some areas close to shore. The weather with cool breezes and sunny days brings  temperatures in the low 80’s, just perfect, making the stay and fishing on this island a very comfortable experience even in August, compared with other Baja regions.

Group tours at Cedros Outdoor AdventuresWe were able to put together more than 9 fishing trips during this fishing season, from May to October, and I am happy to say that the presence of fish has been abundant and reliable with excellent catches every trip. We are experiencing extremely abundant bait fish occurring naturally all over the island. The yellowtail is stuffed with it, so some days it has been a challenge to make them take our bait. This is a lesson in how nature can impact the novice’s catch. But even with the additional challenge of getting the fish to bite, the sheer abundance of fish ensures the persistent angler will succeed.

So far this season our average fishermen has gotten his quota of yellowtail and calico bass every day. I believe that the pictures will tell the story better than anything I can write. Among the highlights are yellowtail consisting catches in the 20’s and 30 lbs, up to 44 lbs, as well as 35 lbs white seabass with some of them going to 50 lbs, a few halibuts, and a grouper reaching 93 lbs.

Catch the really big ones. When our guests arrive in Cedros, they are often surprised to find a genuine Baja fishing town, full of gentle, friendly people going about their activities with their families. Here people live simply, but yet you can find most modern services. There are no banks or ATMs, but there is wireless internet, pharmacy, doctors, a hotel, restaurants and government services.  Best of all there is virtually no violent crime in this small, close-knit island community of 4000 people.

Quite a CatchOur guests' main target is generally yellowtail. They know Cedros is the best place to get both quality and quantity because many of them have been here on the sportfishing boats from San Diego. The difference is that we are able to fly our guests down so they can fish the same day. They also will sleep in the local hotel and eat in local restaurants. The return home is comfortable too, because they are back home in a few hours.

Another important difference is the capability of our pangas (28 ft open boats with 3 fishermen max) to get faster to the “boilings”, fish close to shore, and in the kelp where some choice fish are be found, such as white seabass.

This year, we are also welcoming spear fishermen. Our skippers from the local abalone fishery have the experience to take care of people underwater, which requires unique skills and motor handling close to shore and kelp beds. They also know the best sites to find fish, because they have been there and working underwater for many years.

Cedros Outdoor Adventures LogoFishing is good on Cedros from early spring through fall. Even in the chillier months, the wind doesn't stop us from our outings on the protected side of the island, the east side, which is where many of the preferred fishing spots are located. We could practically guarantee our outings everyday.
