By early April summer is well underway and it is beginning to warm up in Baja California Sur. Spring time is the most popular time for visitors and residents alike to get out and explore Baja Sur. Our temperatures range from the lower 80’s to mid 90°F and the Sea of Cortez is absolutely beautiful for so many activities from scuba and snorkeling to kayaking and camping.
Summer kicks in about mid May as temps rise to the upper 90's in the daytime, but the nights still cool off nicely. By late June we can hit the 100°F mark regularly but it remains dry through mid August. Usually by mid June the Sea is one of the great dive sights in the world. Grupo Fun Baja offers diving excursions in small groups to Espiritu Santos, Los Islotes and El Bajo depending on weather and conditions.
Fun Baja offers dive instruction for the beginner, intermediate and experienced divers. The dive masters that accompany our trip have years of diving experience in these waters. They will help you and your small group to enjoy the marvels of the Sea of Cortez to the max. In late summer when the humidity kicks in is when the diving really gets to be world class. With plenty of sea life and visibility that usually excedes 60' great diving lasts through November.
Temperatures in the islands of the Sea can be as much as 10°F cooler than inland temps. So the islands make a great place for locals and travelers to go to escape the heat. Grupo Fun Baja offers the highest quality excursions and can provide complete travel options for your adventure in Baja. The Sea really warms up by early summer too, making it easy to enjoy the crystal blue waters and amazing sea life that abounds in our region.
If you are visiting La Paz, it is a great time to take a land tour of some of the rest of Baja Sur. Fun Baja offers tours to Todos Santos as well as Baja Sur Loop tours that take you to some of the unique places often missed by travelers.
With the Todos Santos tour you can explore the sidewalk tiendas or beautiful art galleries the line the streets of this “Pueblo Magico” village on the Pacific coast of Baja. The tour also takes you to some of the beautiful beaches that have long made Todos a favorite of North American visitors. Todos Santos is also home of the Hotel California, renovate in the last decade with an architectural flair. Fine dining for lunch or diner is also a great event to attend in Todos.
On the Baja Sur Loop tour you can visit El Triunfo, a silver mining town less than an hour south of La Paz. The largest city in Baja in the early 1900’s, the now very small town now boasts the Baja Piano museum. Although a highly unlike place for such a museum, the town once had the highest population of pianos per capita of any place in Mexico. The quaint little town and local mission are true Baja photo opportunities.
The tour also visits the always popular North American enclave of Los Barrilles. For decades the quiet community has been a haven for snowbirds who enjoy the quiet Baja lifestyle and sport fishing of the region.
The tour also visits historic and picturesque San Jose del Cabo. The zocolo and adjoining streets have all been renovated in their traditional Mexican colonial design and there are a large number of great dining and shopping experiences. San Jose is also steeped in history, being one of the locations of Baja battles between US and Mexican forces in the Mexican/American War some 160 years ago.
The all time favorite of La Paz visitors though, is the trips to the Islands of Espiritu Santos and the Sea Lion rookery at Los Islotes. Both scuba divers and snorkelers will find delight in the yearling sea lions who flirt and play with their watery guests. Even if you don’t want to get your feet wet, trips to the islands can mean a hike on the stunning desert islands can be arranged for you. Fun Baja’s small group adventures and boats provide you the opportunity to be more in control of your adventure.
T
his winter we have had our usual visitors, the whale sharks. These largest of all fish, some as much as 20m long feed on microscopic plankton in the waters right in front of La Paz. Now it appears that at least one young pair has decided to make the coastal waters of the Bay of La Paz their year round home. These gentle giants are un threatened by the presence of man and most of Fun Baja’s and spring trips end with a visit to where the whale sharks are feeding. On appropriate weather days guest can swim right up to these toothless monsters and get a true sense of how large and docile these fish are. With no significant predators as adults, these biggest of all fish are masters of their environment..
Whatever your taste in outdoor adventure in the Sea of Cortez region of Baja, Fun Baja offers quality excursions to the discerning travelers.![]()
