Exploring the Sea of Cortez with a Private Yacht Charter
The Sea of Cortez is one of the worlds great cruising grounds. With hundreds of beautiful unspoiled anchorages, The Sea offers abundant fishing, snorkeling, diving kayaking and more. Chartering a private yacht for day trips or extended adventures is always an exciting and luxurious way to enjoy the waters surrounding La Paz.
How many times have looked down from the flight you were on to see azure blue waters surrounding the beautiful islands of the Sea of Cortez? Have you wondered how clear that water really is, how warm? Have you wondered what the fishing is like around the islands, away from the fleet of pangas and cruisers a little further south? Have you wondered what it would be like to spend a few nights in one of the many tranquil coves of Espiritu Santos? Well if your like me, its been something I’ve wanted to do for years. Now La Paz has come of age and offers yacht charters that specialize in custom private adventures. You create the adventure, talk it over with your Capitan and Concierge, pick your menu and destinations. And it not nearly what you would think the price would be.
There is a new fleet of yachts catering to the average vacationer, that brings into reach a customized adventure that only owners of large private yachts have done. It’s not new, but in La Paz, the experience is just beginning. You can easily put together a day trip to Espiritu Santos or Isla Partida, and experience some of the most incredibly beautiful waters and scenery that Baja Sur has to offer. Don’t have enough time to get it all in? Try a ¾ day trip to Balandra, or anchor off the shore of Tecolote beach and enjoy some great seafood, cervezas and sun.
Baja Charters is one of the premier companies that cater to people who want a little more than just the standard excursion. For people that want to make their adventure something a little more memorable and special. Angie Carranza started her little company with one thing in mind; private custom yacht adventures. Her dream is to one day own a fleet of yachts catering to groups of all sizes with trips that range from ¾ day to a week or more. ‘There is so much Baja has to offer, so many adventures that people are just waiting to discover.’ Angie spent many years as a naturalist on cruise ships, working for tour companies and fishing charter fleets so she has a good idea of what people are looking for.

“Most people want to spend time with friends and family enjoying the beautiful weather La Paz has to offer. Most of our yachts have air conditioning making it very comfortable for extended trips cruising up the Sea of Cortez. We offer
authentic food preparation but have also catered to the special requests of our guests. What sets us apart is the service and professionalism of our staff and crew, I always am their to greet our Clients before they leave and when they return.”
Baja Charters touts yachts ranging from 30’ to 60’, perfect for families and groups of friends who are looking for a special adventure. Day trips start from $750 - $1600 / day and includes beverages, meals and permits if necessary. Multi-day trips range from overnight island excursions to Espiritu, to 5 and 7 day trips to Loretto.
One of the best parts of these adventures is kayaking or snorkeling in the clear waters of the Sea of Cortez. Many of the yachts have tenders that can help you explores some the secluded coves and beaches.
If fishing is your game, Baja Charters offers some of the nicest sportfishers in La Paz. Several yachts have fished in the La Paz Gold Cup, soon becoming one of the premier tournament events in La Paz and the Baja Sur. The great thing is being able to create your own trip, so you don’t have to wake up at the crack of dawn and line up for boarding. Just tell your concierge when you would like to get going. The Capitan will make recommendations on what and where the bite is, but you can make the call. I’ve always enjoyed just kicking back, while trolling for marlin, chatting with friends and smoking cigars and drinking cervezas. Our marinero, happily offers us a cold one, how much better does it get?
