Insider Information

Over the years I have exported many different goods from the United States to import into Mexico there are several things you want to be prepared to have ready. You will need to provide your original receipts of your goods purchased in the states. In some cases, such as goods imported into the U.S. first, you will be required to obtain a certificate of origin as well from the supplier, manufacturer or distributor. Your receipts or goods to be imported will also have to be translated to Spanish so that Mexican customs (Aduana) can easily identify what you’re importing to Mexico.

You will have to have an importation permit or you may use at an additional cost the permit of the customs broker. You goods can come from different areas and consolidated in the warehouse but be sure your descriptions and quantities are accurate so that your paperwork will go smoothly. Any inaccuracies can really slow down the process of importation and or exportation.

Many times products have special requirements and therefore you may have some extra steps such as obtaining FDA certifications, agriculture certificates, certificate of origin, and create a translated order form (catalog) including each of the of the goods you wish to export from the US into Mexico.

These requirements at first may seem daunting but if you are regularly planning on importing these goods to Mexico then you may of course you may re-use the information you have provided and the process will become more streamlined each time.

There may be other requirements depending on what it is that you are importing to Mexico and what the use will be. The importation duties levied by Mexico customs will also be different depending on the goods and their origin. Some goods may not able to import at all. Please be sure to consult directly with your customs broker for the most up to date information.

I have used many different companies through the years for different services but highly recommend working with Columbia Export Services because it eliminates the need to try and coordinate warehousing, freight forwarding and transportation provided by independent companies. They have it all and provide services for all of Baja California and most of Mexico.
