Tiger Shark (Galeocerdo cuvier)

A tiger shark weighing as much as 1600 pounds was caught on East Cape just before hurricane Marty according to reports in the Los Angeles Times 9/30.

According to the report the shark was caught by local fishermen when they returned to tend their buoyed lines. The shark was so large it had to be gutted to be hauled into the panga. Large sharks are rarely caught anymore in the Sea of Cortez, because of years of fishing pressure.

It was also reported that inside the shark they found a goat and two whole turtles. The goat was most likely the victim of an eariler demise in hurricane flooding.

The tiger shark is one of the more common sharks in warm tropical waters. They can be found along the California coast south to Peru and most other tropical oceans. They are particularly common around Hawaii.

Tiger sharks are said to be second only to great whites when it comes to aggressive tendencies and should be given the same respect when sighted. The tiger shark also is know to hunt in shallower waters than the great whites. The species is also an indiscriminant eater. Goats, turtles and even radios have been found in the gut of tiger sharks.

To the benefit of the adventure diver the Sea of Corte offers opportunities see these and many other marine species. The schooling of the hammerhead sharks  and the Manta Rays at the Sea Mount. Look for upcoming articles in the BajaInsider.com as we approach the peak of the scuba diving season.

Although tiger sharks inhabit the Sea of Cortez and can be an aggressive hunter, we were unable to find any reports of tiger shark attacks in the Sea.
