The BajaInsider Team visited San Pedrito surf beach between Pescadero
and Todos Santos.
As we meandered down the arroyo headed to the San
Pedrito
beach from the highway turn off things began to look a little different.
As we passed the rock cliffs on the right it became apparent. There
is no more vegetation blocking the view all the way to the beach! Mother
Nature has come and done another remodel;. Just like a women to change
her mind on something, like where to put the beach!
The
sand now extends hundreds of feet further into the Pacific Ocean changing
the surf break a bit too. The cabañas, that have housed many a surfer
and tourist for years, use to be much closer to the beach. They also
have been in much better condition. As you can see from
our photos the restaurant, cabañas, washroom and trailer park have all
been but destroyed. Amazingly enough the old beach house that is the
furthest out on the point seem to go untouched and will not anytime
soon be touched by the high tides, as it use to be.
We
talked with a couple of caretakers Jeff and Dave that actually survived
the storm by taking shelter in the restaurant.

They
said "We stayed there until a wall gave way, then we took shelter in
those trees hanging on for hours not be swept away too". Jeff explained,
" If it had lasted a half hour longer I may not have made it". He was
hanging on with a 100-pound stray dog that has adopted him and the campground.
Unfortunately the dogs girlfriend and her puppies could not be saved
as things went from bad to worse very quickly.
As you can also see in our pictures they were not able to save several
of the vehicles (As far as vehicle stories go read "Here today Gone
in Minute!")
Once a flood of this nature begins you really are better off going to
high ground immediately and watching Momma as she does as she pleases.
There is nothing you can do till she settles down and decides it is
over.
You will see several stories at this time in the BajaInsider concerning
storms and floods because it is our season for this weather in Baja
Sur.
We
also realize many of our readers have an interest in knowing how things
fair down here during this time. Finally there are a whole lot of us
that just love a good storm. In fact there are people that now visit
Baja at this time because of lack of crowds and the dramatic storms
that change the desert into the tropics over night.
Bien viaje! Jaime Santiago
